Abstract: The catalytic hydrogenation of trinitroaromatic compounds is of practical importance for utilization of explosives and synthesis of various commercial products. The study examined the effect of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid (TNBA) hydrogenation parameters (temperature, pressure, concentration of reactant, and nature of solvent) as well as conditions of the catalyst synthesis and pretreatment on the process rate and selectivity. The mesoporous carbon material Sibunit was chosen as a support for the palladium catalysts. The catalyst having the highest dispersion of palladium particles showed the maximum activity in the target reaction of TNBA hydrogenation to 2,4,6-triaminobenzene (TAB) (with a selectivity above 90%) under the specified conditions (a temperature of 50 oC, a pressure of 0.5 MPa, 170 g TNBA / 1 g Pd ratio). The NMR analysis of the products was used to suggest a scheme of the transformations occurring in the presence of Pd/C catalysts.
