Abstract: Structural, electronic and catalytic properties of Pd-Ga/Sibunit and Pd/Sibunit catalysts are studied by XRD and XPS methods. Using XRD, it was shown that the bimetallic Pd2+xGa1–x phase is formed in the model 7%Pd-4.62%Ga/Sibunit sample after reduction in H2 at 500 °C. XPS analysis of the samples under conditions of gradual heating in H2 showed that gallium and palladium that are located on the catalyst surface are present mainly in the oxidized state and a small amount as a mixed palladium-gallium phase. However, the introduction of gallium significantly increases the dispersion of catalytic active particles, which is likely the reason for the higher catalytic activity of Pd-Ga/Sibunit in acetylene hydrogenation but lower selectivity towards ethylene compared with the monometallic sample.
