Abstract:
The effect of carbon black morphology on the viscosity of PVAl hydrogels containing 5% polymer, 5% filler, 1% crosslinking agent (boric acid) and 89 water was investigated. The fillers were specimens of carbon black of grades P145, P161, P514 and N339, which differed in morphological parameters, i.e. in the size and shape of the primary aggregates. The viscosity was measured at the maximum shear rate on a rotational viscometer at about 20 deg C. It was found that, with increase in the coefficient of sphericity of the carbon black aggregates, the strength of the structural network of the filler increased only by a factor of 3 to 4, which indicated a small number of contacts of the primary filler aggregates in its structural network. It appeared that, to produce stronger particulate-filled hydrogels, use should be made of carbon black with high coefficients of sphericity of its primary aggregates
