Abstract:
The mechanochemical technology has several advantages, such as simple waste-free process, ecological safety, the possibility of obtaining a product in the metastable state. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a particular class of 2D materials. LDHs are composed of ‘brucite-like’ cationic layers. Charge compensating anions are located in the interlayer galleries leading to the generalised LDH formula, [M2+1−xM3+x (OH)2]x+[An−]x/n•mH2O, where M2+/M3+ = divalent/trivalent metal cation and An = interlayer. In addition, it is reported that Mg–Zr mixed oxides were used as catalysts in the aldol condensation reaction of furfural. This fact emphasizes the role played by the cationic composition of LDHs for control of the properties of the mixed oxides obtained after thermal treatments. As a result, LDH structures with a wide variety of mono- to tetravalent cations have been gaining increasing interest. Therefore, the introduction of tetravalent cations, which greatly modifies the layer charge, could be an attractive route for the generation of unusual acid-basic properties.
The mechanochemical technology has great potential for use in synthesizing new type of LDH, those containing metal at high valence over 4, which are difficult to achieve by common solution process.
In the present work, the mechanochemical synthesis has been used to obtain layered double hydroxides and their mixed oxides . Mechanical activation (MA) was performed in a water-cooled high-energy planetary mill AGO-2 (Novits Ltd., Novosibirsk, Russia).
The present work aims at studying the composition, structure layered double hydroxides synthesized by the mechanical activation under various modes.
